Dental implant surgery is generally safe and can performed by GP Dentists/Dental Surgeons but some difficult implant surgical cases are usually managed by a specialist Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. Unfortunately complications can happen even in the “SIMPLE” dental implant surgery and costs of dental implants may not be expensive. (See FAQ below)
Problems such as permanent lip numbness and water leaking from nose can occur after implant surgery
Lip numbness after surgery may be a sign of nerve damage.
The dental implant might loosen and fall out with failure of integration with jaw bone.
Infection can happen after dental implant surgery with non healing socket and loss of integration.
Implant surgery can perforate the sinus leading to water leaking out of nose on drinking and infection.
Even a "simple" dental implant case can have complications and surgery should be done by someone experienced. There are some conditions that may require specialist skills:
Broken tooth that requires surgical removal and an implant can be placed immediately
Insufficient bone for dental implant where bone grafting and sinus lift procedures are needed
Patients with history of smoking or medical conditions like sinus disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and hypertension.
All efforts are made to ensure the patient is comfortable with no rush for time and crowding in the clean and spacious clinic. Some of our patients can be snoring even during surgery! Patients are assured with a peace of mind when having surgery with us.
Special scanner for accurate assessment of nerve/sinus before surgery to lessen risk of damage
Special techniques and medications before operation ie "pre-emptive analgesia" to reduce anxiety and complications of surgery
Expert surgical techniques and soft tissue management to optimise outcome of implant surgery
Our clinic has hospital standards of sterility with spacious rooms and UV light against airborne viruses. Appointments are well spaced to prevent crowding and risks of cross infection.

Dr Victor Fan was formerly a Senior Consultant Surgeon in the National University Hospital and Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, National University of Singapore. He is the only Singaporean oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is fully accreditated in the United Kingdom as he is also medically qualified and completed the rigorous training for certification.
On average, a dental implant can cost approximately from $2000 to $2500 depending on the type of implant used, the difficulty of the case and skill of the surgeon. The cost for treatment by a specialist surgeon or by GP dentist/dental surgeon is comparable and complications may arise in some cases which require special surgical skills. Medisave claims are allowable for the surgical part of the procedure and a claim of up to $1250 may be obtainable. Mini implants (small implants less than 3 mm in diameter) are cheaper and may cost only $1000- $2000. But, they are only for special cases and may not last more than a few years as they are not meant to withstand excessive bite strength because of their size and are usually not integrated into the bone. The normal size dental implants, however, have 20-30 years of clinical history well documented in the literature.
Dental implants can be used to help support a denture and improve retention, especially on the lower jaw. A clinical assessment is essential to determine suitability.
It is not necessary to replace all missing teeth with dental implants. Sometimes, the specialist dentist may decide that an implant bridge will be sufficient for biting strength. The amount of bone present also determines how many implants can be placed but bone grafting by the specialist oral & maxillofacial surgeon can be done to improve the bone volume. It is dependent on a clinical assessment that can be done in our clinic.
As long as someone is fit enough to have dental extractions, he/she will likely be suitable for dental implant surgery. Smoking, diabetes and osteoporosis may affect the osseointegration rate and need expert management. Dr Victor Fan is a specialist oral & maxillofacial surgeon who is qualified in dental and medical field. He is trained to treat clinically compromised patients. Our practice is situated in a major private hospital where cross-discipline medical doctors are available to provide extra care. Some patients may need optimization of his/her medical conditions before dental implant surgery.
